Vamikibart for uveitic macular oedema

Vamikibart is being developed as a treatment for uveitic macular oedema (UMO). UMO often occurs as a complication of uveitis. Uveitis is an eye condition where the middle layer of the eye becomes inflamed, and it is the leading cause of visual impairment in the UK. UMO is diagnosed when the inflammation affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for detailed central vision. UMO is therefore defined as a thickening of the macular region, which results from a breakdown of the outer and/or inner blood–retina barrier. Breakdown of this barrier leads to the leaking of pigments needed for vision and the accumulation of fluid. Currently UMO in uveitis is mainly treated with steroid medications or, therapies specifically targeted at reducing macular oedema. However, there are concerns around the long-term use of these treatments because of their known side effects.
