Upadacitinib for treating systemic lupus erythematosus

Upadacitinib is being developed for the treatment of moderately to severely active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in adults. SLE is a chronic disease where the immune system (the body’s fighting mechanism against diseases) is dysfunctional and mistakenly identifies the body’s own tissues as foreign invaders. These form immune complexes (clusters of immune proteins) which cause inflammation and damage, affecting body organs and the joints. The most common symptoms of SLE are joint aches, muscle aches and pains, and extreme fatigue. Other symptoms include rashes, low blood levels, migraines, hair loss, and anxiety. Patients with moderate disease activity have more serious manifestations, and severe disease activity is defined as organ- or life-threatening. The causes of SLE are not fully understood. Possible causes include viral infections, sunlight, puberty, childbirth and menopause. SLE affects more women than men. SLE can be challenging to treat, and safe and effective treatment options are currently limited. An unmet need exists for additional targeted therapies to manage SLE signs and symptoms.
