Setrusumab for treating osteogenesis imperfecta

Setrusumab is in clinical development for reducing bone fractures in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). OI is a group of rare genetic conditions that mainly affect the bones. It is sometimes known as brittle bone disease. OI is caused by faults in the genes that control the production of collagen. Collagen is the main protein found in bone and is important for bone strength. People with OI have bones that do not develop normally. This means their bones are much weaker than usual and are more likely to break easily. OI has seven types, ranging from mild forms with slightly fragile bones to severe forms where fractures can occur before birth and bones are deformed. Common features include short stature, dental problems, weak tendons, heart issues, hearing loss, joint flexibility, pain, and fatigue. The current treatment options for OI, medical and orthopaedic, are limited and not efficient enough to improve the low bone density, bone fragility, growth, and mobility of the affected individuals.
