Ritlecitinib for nonsegmental vitiligo

Ritlecitinib is in clinical development for treatment of nonsegmental vitiligo in adults. Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition caused by a lack of pigment in the skin produced by cells called melanocytes, which leads to the development of pale white patches. Nonsegmental vitiligo is the most common form and is thought to be an auto-immune disorder, where the body’s immune
system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own cells. Vitiligo may lead to itching, an increased vulnerability to sunburn, eye problems and a partial loss of hearing. Problems with confidence and self-esteem are also common, particularly if it affects areas of exposed skin. First line treatment for vitiligo aims to reduce the appearance of white patches using steroid creams and ointments, or treatment with light if these do not work. However, such treatments are not permanent and do not stop vitiligo from spreading.
