Rezafungin for preventing invasive fungal disease in patients undergoing allogenic blood and bone marrow transplantation

Rezafungin is in clinical development for the prevention of invasive fungal disease in patients undergoing allogenic blood and bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Allogenic BMT is used to treat a wide range of diseases including cancerous and non-cancerous blood-related disorders and other specific disorders of the immune system. In allogeneic transplants, stem cells are taken from a donor and given to a recipient. Invasive fungal infections occur when certain types of fungi, such as moulds or yeasts, spread into the blood stream and other part of the body and cause serious illness. People with weakened immune systems, such as from allogenic BMT are at higher risk of most fungal infections. These infections are life-threatening and difficult to treat. They remain a leading cause of illness and death in these patients. Symptoms of invasive fungal infections can include shortness of breath, cough, fever, and chest pain.
