Pelacarsen for treating hyperlipoproteinemia in adults with established cardiovascular disease

Pelacarsen is in clinical development for the treatment of adult patients with established cardiovascular disease (CVD) and elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]. Lp(a)is a large lipoprotein made by the liver. Lipoproteins are parcels made of fat and protein and their function is to transport lipids around the body in the blood. A high level of Lp(a) in the blood has been identified as a risk factor for CVD. CVD can cause atherosclerosis, heart attacks, strokes, peripheral arterial disease, aortic valve disease and heart failure There are currently limited pharmacological treatments for reducing Lp(a) levels. In addition to this, diet and exercise have little or no effect on Lp(a) levels. This highlights an unmet need for additional treatment options in this population.
