Inclacumab for preventing vaso-occlusive crises associated with sickle cell disease

Inclacumab is in development for the prevention of vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. SCD is an inherited condition that causes red blood cells to become misshapen, which limits their ability to carry oxygen around the body. SCD is more common in people from African or Caribbean heritage. SCD can cause a wide range of symptoms. These can start from a few months of age, although many children have few or no symptoms if treatment is started early on. VOCs are a common symptom of SCD and happen when misshapen blood cells stick to blood vessel walls, blocking blood vessels. There are currently limited options to prevent people with SCD from experiencing VOCs.
