Inavolisib with pertuzumab-trastuzumab maintenance therapy for locally advanced or metastatic PIK3CA-mutated HER2-positive breast cancer after induction therapy

Inavolisib in combination with pertuzumab-trastuzumab is being developed as maintenance therapy after first line induction therapy for PIK3CA-mutated human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. In patients with breast cancer carrying a PIK3CA mutation, an abnormal phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) enzyme is produced that stimulates cancer cells to divide and grow in an uncontrolled way. HER2-positive cancers can grow more quickly because the HER2 protein encourages cell growth. Locally advanced cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, the breast skin or the chest wall. Metastatic breast cancer means it has spread to other parts of the body. There are limited maintenance treatment options for this patient group, hence a need for more effective maintenance therapies.
