Giredestrant adjuvant therapy for treating ER+ HER2- early breast cancer

Giredestrant is being developed as an adjuvant treatment (extra treatment given after the main treatment) for estrogen receptor positive (ER+) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (HER2-) early breast cancer. Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells begin to grow uncontrollably and form a tumour. Early stage breast cancer means the cancer has not spread beyond the breast or the lymph nodes in the armpit on the same side of the body. ER+ cancer has cells that use the hormone oestrogen as a growth signal. This type of cancer often responds to hormone (endocrine) treatments that block or lower oestrogen. However, up to a third of people eventually have the cancer come back during or after adjuvant hormone treatment. Many patients also must pause or stop treatment early because of side effects or safety concerns, thereby increasing the risk of death. These limitations show the need for more effective treatment options that are easier to stay on and prevent or delay the disease coming back.
