Ferric citrate for managing serum phosphorus and iron deficiency in chronic kidney disease

Ferric citrate is in clinical development for treating elevated (high levels of) phosphate and iron deficiency in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). For adults with severe kidney disease, it is often difficult to remove excess phosphate from their bodies. This can lead to more phosphate in the blood than needed, which may cause long-term problems like heart and bone disease. Iron deficiency anaemia occurs when the body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells. This can happen because of low iron content in the food people eat, if the body cannot absorb the iron properly, or due to blood loss. Iron deficiency anaemia can negatively affect overall health and well-being, daily activities, productivity and quality of life. Traditional iron treatments often do not absorb well and can cause side effects, making compliance difficult.
