Eneboparatide for treating chronic hypoparathyroidism

Eneboparatide is in clinical development for the treatment of adult patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition where the parathyroid glands, which are in the neck near the thyroid gland, produce too little parathyroid hormone. This makes blood calcium levels fall and blood phosphorus levels rise, which can cause a wide range of symptoms, including muscle cramps, pain and twitching. Most hypoparathyroidism cases occur following surgery for benign and malignant thyroid disorders, hyperparathyroidism, and laryngeal or other head and neck cancers, but can also be caused by autoimmune disease, genetic causes or can be idiopathic. Hypoparathyroidism is typically diagnosed as chronic if a patient’s calcium level does not return to normal within six months of their surgery. Current treatment options for hypoparathyroidism can have severe side effects and can result in a poor quality of life.
