Divarasib for treating advanced non-small-cell lung cancer with KRAS G12C mutation

Divarasib is being developed as a treatment for a type of lung cancer called Kristen rat sarcoma (KRAS) G12C-positive advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has been previously treated. NSCLC is the most common type of primary lung cancer, meaning It starts from the lungs. Advanced or metastatic NSCLC means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. KRAS is a small instruction (gene) in cells. Sometimes the gene changes or become damaged (mutates) in many types of cancer. In some lung cancers, the KRAS mutation happens at a specific spot. At this spot, one building block of the gene is replaced by another. This specific change is called G12C. Cancers with the KRAS G12C mutation often have poorer outcomes. Smoking causes most lung cancers therefore is the biggest risk factor. An approved medicine which targets the KRAS G12C mutation had shown that they can shrink tumours in some patients. However, they do not work for everyone. Therefore, there is a need for better and safer treatment options.
