Camizestrant for treating ER-positive/ HER2-negative early stage breast cancer

Camizestrant is being developed as a treatment for early breast cancer with oestrogen receptor positive (ER+) and Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 negative (HER2-) biological markers. Early breast cancer refers to cancer that is confined to the breast or nearby lymph nodes (small structures that work as filters for foreign substances). In ER+ breast cancer, the cancer cells use the hormone oestrogen to grow. In HER2-breast cancer, the cancer cells have a small amount or none of a protein called HER2 on their surface, which makes them grow more slowly. Camizestrant is intended for people who have completed surgery and at least two years of standard hormone (endocrine) therapy but still have a moderate or high risk of their cancer coming back. Many people with ER+ breast cancer receive hormone-blocking treatment after surgery to help prevent recurrence, but for some, the cancer can return years later. Patients with higher-risk features, such as larger tumours or spread to lymph nodes, remain at ongoing risk of recurrence even after standard therapy. There is a need for additional treatments that can reduce this long-term risk and improve outcomes.
