Asundexian for the prevention of ischaemic stroke in adults after a non-cardiometabolic ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack

Asundexian is in clinical development for prevention of ischemic stroke in adults after a non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). A stroke is when blood stops flowing to a part of the brain. Acute ischaemic stroke is caused by clots blocking blood vessels, which cuts off the blood supply to parts of the brain. Without a blood supply, brain cells can be damaged or destroyed due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. Symptoms include numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body, and often problems with speech and swallowing. The risk of stroke is increased by factors including age, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability. Many of stroke survivors experience significant and long-term physical and psychological impacts. Despite significant progress in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, there is still great capacity for further improvements. Treatments to restore blood flow to the brain with other anticoagulant therapies carry a high risk of serious bleeding, which means safer alternatives are needed.
