Bowel cancer is a prevalent cancer worldwide and, in the UK, with its burden is projected to increase significantly by 2030. Early detection is critical for improving survival rates. Currently a screening test, Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), is used for screening bowel cancer, which if positive is followed with a colonoscopy. Emerging blood-based liquid biopsies may be used as non-invasive options following a positive FIT to determine the need for colonoscopy and therefore present a promising option to be used in tandem with current FIT screening. Knowledge regarding the types of upcoming tests, might facilitate strategy and policy for implementation in the UK.
