A Pipeline Analysis of Healthcare Technologies in Development for Addiction

This pipeline analysis gives an overview of the emerging global healthcare technologies (medicinal products, regulated medical devices and psychedelics) perceived to treat or promote recovery from addiction to opioids, opiates, stimulants, cannabis, cannabinoids, alcohol, gabapentin, pregabalin, benzodiazepines, gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), ketamine and/or novel psychoactive substances.

Substance addiction is a disorder that causes loss of control over substance use or causes the compulsive seeking and taking of substances despite adverse consequences. Despite affecting over one billion people globally in 2016, addiction is still stigmatised and treatment options limited. The overall number of trials for the treatment of addiction have increased since the 1980s but are mostly in development to treat or support recovery from addiction to alcohol, stimulants, and opioids/opiates. There is real opportunity to stimulate innovation within the gaps that correlate with unmet need.
