Identifying new and emerging device, diagnostic and digital technologies for paediatric neurological trauma

Neurological trauma is a leading cause of disability in children and young people, yet innovation in HealthTech has largely focused on adults, leaving no consolidated source of information on emerging technologies for paediatric populations. These findings highlight the need for greater investment in paediatric HealthTech, particularly for prevention and long-term rehabilitation, and demonstrate the value of horizon scanning in guiding policy and research priorities.

Neurological trauma is a leading cause of disability in children and young people, yet innovation has largely focused on adults and there has been no consolidated source of information on emerging HealthTech for this population. This horizon scan identified 39 emerging device, diagnostic and digital technologies for paediatric neurological trauma, with innovation concentrated on assessment and diagnostics across areas including brain health, cognitive function, mobility, rehabilitation and healthcare delivery. The findings reveal a growing but still underdeveloped innovation pipeline compared with adult care, highlighting important opportunities for investment and research, particularly in prevention, long-term rehabilitation and support for participation in everyday life. As well as providing a valuable snapshot of future innovation, the study demonstrates how horizon scanning can inform proactive policy, research and service planning to address critical gaps in care.
