Horizon Scanning Methods for Health Care Technology Innovation Identification: Rapid Scoping Review of Patent Research Studies

This rapid scoping review sought to understand how patents are being used to inform healthcare technology innovation identification. This review identified different patent sources, methods for analysis and the main purpose of using patents in horizon scanning.

This study explored how patent analysis can support innovation and horizon scanning in health care. Through a rapid scoping review of 124 studies published since 2020, it found that patents serve as valuable early indicators of technological trends, particularly in areas like cancer and respiratory conditions. Most studies relied on patent databases, with many using automated and visualization tools to map trends and strategies. However, inconsistent methods, especially around deduplication, risk inflating results. Overall, patents provide important insights for policy, research, and strategy development, but greater methodological transparency is needed.
