A Horizon Scan of Neurotechnology Innovations

This horizon scan provides an overview of neurotechnologies in development and those approved by the FDA as of June 2024, focusing on applications in mental health, healthy ageing, and physical disability. Conducted in March 2024, the study identified 81 unique neurotechnologies through systematic searches of clinical trials, conferences, journals, and news. Technologies were categorised, with 23 related to mental health, 31 to healthy ageing, and 42 to physical disability. Findings indicate that 79% lacked FDA approval, and 77.4% were in early development stages (pilot/feasibility studies), while 22.6% had reached pivotal or post-market stages. Digital features such as software, apps, and device connectivity were prevalent, though only three technologies included AI components. The study highlights the field’s complex regulatory challenges and ethical considerations, emphasizing the need for responsible development and pre-emptive measures to address safety concerns.
