Like all successful organisations the Innovation Observatory is built on the collective effort of a multidisciplinary team.
The Innovation Observatory is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and hosted by Newcastle University. Established in 2017, we bring together expertise in research, data science and health innovation to identify and assess emerging healthcare innovations, helping health and care organisations prepare for the future.

The CORE Information Retrieval Forum is a unique day for people who specialise in information retrieval, systematic searching, knowledge or data mining, evidence synthesis, archiving and reference management.
This FREE in-person event on Thursday 29th January 2026 (9:30 – 18:00) at The Catalyst, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, is sponsored by the NIHR Methodology Incubator and NIHR Innovation Observatory hosted at Newcastle University.
Following a team science ethos, information professionals from all disciplines are welcomed to come together and share their stories, their knowledge, their research and experience and to connect with others in the information community.
After the inaugural event which took place in January 2025, the 2026 programme will feature thought-provoking sessions, practical advice, and plenty of opportunities to connect with peers.
Key Themes for 2026
Discover how information specialists are shaping research across disciplines. Sessions will showcase new methods, key learnings, and impact stories from influencing practice and policy to embedding patient and public involvement (PPI). Attendees will also have the opportunity to present their own research through posters and oral presentations.
AI continues to transform how we work. This year, we’ll go beyond the basics to explore cutting-edge applications for information specialists, including large language models, prompting techniques, ethical considerations, and the environmental impact of new tools.
Securing research funding is both a challenge and an opportunity. Sessions will focus on sources of funding, practical guidance for those new to writing bids, and insights from information specialists with first-hand experience. Dedicated networking activities will help you connect with colleagues interested in developing joint proposals.
Gain practical insights into career progression within the information profession. Hear from experienced freelancers and professionals who will share their advice on building flexible, rewarding careers in a rapidly evolving sector.
Networking remains at the heart of the Forum. From informal conversations to structured activities, the event is designed to help you meet peers, identify shared interests, and spark new collaborations. Badge stickers and themed workshops will make it easier to connect with colleagues working in similar roles with shared challenges.
Don’t miss out! Get your place booked now and join us for a day of learning, discussion, and collaboration with peers across the information profession.
