Meet the Team
Like all successful organisations the Innovation Observatory is built on the collective effort of a multidisciplinary team.
The Innovation Observatory is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and hosted by Newcastle University. Established in 2017, we bring together expertise in research, data science and health innovation to identify and assess emerging healthcare innovations, helping health and care organisations prepare for the future.

Like all successful organisations the Innovation Observatory is built on the collective effort of a multidisciplinary team.
We help the health and care ecosystem anticipate and prepare for the future.
Our governance arrangements ensure that priorities, resources and delivery are aligned to the needs of the health and care system while maintaining appropriate assurance and public accountability.
The NIHR Innovation Observatory identifies emerging innovations across the global healthcare landscape and transforms them into trusted intelligence that helps organisations anticipate change, make informed decisions and prepare for the future.

Join us for CORE Conversations: a look back at 2025 and your chance to help shape the future of information retrieval at CORE 2026.
On Thursday 30th January 2025, NIHR Innovation Observatory and NIHR Methodology Incubator joined forces to bring the first ever CORE Information Retrieval Forum to The Catalyst in Newcastle. ‘CORE’, standing for Community, Opportunities, Research and Experience, is exactly what was delivered through a mix of keynotes, panels, presentations and plenty of networking!
This unique day was a celebration of innovation in the field, designed for people who specialise in information retrieval, systematic searching and knowledge or data mining for evidence synthesis or horizon scanning, and information professionals were welcomed from all disciplines. Over 120 people were in attendance from across the globe including Brazil, Baltimore, Canada and Slovakia. Read the full write up of the event here.
We’d love for you to join us for a reflective and forward looking webinar as we unpack highlights from the CORE Information Retrieval Forum 2025 and invite your input to shape the future of CORE 2026.
This interactive session will begin with a short recap of CORE 2025 from Oleta Williams, NIHR Innovation Observatory featuring photos and standout moments, before diving into a presentation and discussion on a key paper from the event:
“Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Evidence Synthesis: Insights from the CORE Information Retrieval Forum”
Presented by Claire Eastaugh & Hannah O’ Keefe, NIHR Innovation Observatory, followed by a live Q&A.
We’ll also share exciting details about the new date and venue for CORE 2026 – and we want your ideas! Whether it’s emerging themes, fresh formats, or untapped challenges in evidence retrieval, this is your chance to contribute.
Breakout rooms will give space for smaller group discussion, with feedback shared in a closing plenary.
