Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Evidence Synthesis: Insights From the CORE Information Retrieval Forum 2025

The CORE Information Retrieval Forum Knowledge Café aimed to explore the views of information specialists on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the intention to better understand the perception of AI, the role AI will play within the information specialist space, the current application of AI, and any hesitancy towards the adoption of AI. The views expressed by the attendees were categorized into four main themes: critical perception, current uses, specific tools and training wants/needs.

The NIHR Innovation Observatory and NIHR Methodology Incubator co-sponsored the inaugural CORE Information Retrieval Forum which took place in January 2025. As part of the event, a Knowledge Café was held where attendees could contribute to six different discussions. These discussions were supported by posters in the Exhibition Hall and a QA code linking to a virtual collaboration tool. This publication is the output from the Artificial Intelligence (AI) discussion where attendees shared their thoughts on AI’s role in information retrieval.
